So you made it through the screening interview- now what?
The call back is a whole other creature, so i am sharing my experience with you so you all be prepared for your own... I had an interview with a firm in Boston on Wednesday. I took the bus down the night before and stayed with a friend in the city. My interview was at 2 on Wednesday. I left at 12:30 to give myself enough time to find the firm.
Problem # 1- I brought knee highs to go with my new suit, thinking my skirt was long enough to cover the top. Well, they were but just barely. If i wlaked around too much, they were likely to fall down. Having my nylons show would be pretty much the most embarassing thing i can imagine at the interview, so before my interview, i had to stop at CVS and buy nylons. Problem solved, right? Wrong...
Problem # 2- I couldn't find anywhere to change into my nylons. I left government center and walked to the firm, but there wasn't even a starbucks around to change. Everywhere else in Boston there is a starbucks at every corner, but now when i could use a latte (and a bathroom) there wasn't any in sight. So here i am walking around in my black suit (black suit 90 degrees= woefully uncomfortable) and i finally manage to change (i will spare you the details).
So i walk into the building and make my way to the firm's reception area. I was greeted by the receptionist and the recruitment coordinator, but then sat down and waited. and waited and waited. My initial interviewer came by to see who i was interviewing with, but they never gave me that information. She went and tried to found out who my interviewers would be... And i wait. And wait. I say hello to every person that walks in the reception area 1) they could be on the hiring committee and therefore my new best friend in the world; and 2) they might be my interviewer. I make small talk with a BU student also interviewing today about the job search, law school in general, etc... Meanwhile, i am hoping he is socially akward or has a horrible GPA, because quite frankly, coming from BU, he doesn't need any more help getting a job. I silently curse when his interviewer comes to get him, although i had been waiting there for 20 minutes before he arrived.
My interviewer from Franklin Pierce comes and gives me a book with the list of my interviewers. I spent the next 10 minutes cramming. So, finally the recruitment coordinator came to take me to my first interview. I was taken from office to office, where i met with 2 associates and 1 partner. These interviews felt much more relaxed than the screening interview. I was asked very few questions, and the attorneys mostly explained how the summer associate program worked, what type of work they did, etc.. I met with each interviewer for 30 minutes and then they walked to me the next interviewers office. Overall, it was much less intimidating than i expected.
Now comes the fun part- waiting. I am trying to think positively and hoping I won't be adding my wall of rejection letters (seriously- i'll post pictures at some point). Best of Luck to everyone who has call-backs coming up!
Happy Job Hunting-
